Organizational communication

Organizational communication is the process through which information is created, shared and interpreted within and outside an organization. It encompasses all the way communication flows to achieve organizational goals and maintain relationships among employees, management and external stakeholders.

Types of Organizational Communication

Organizational communication can be broadly categorized as follows:

  • Formal and Informal Communication:

Formal communication involves official channels such as meetings, reports, emails, memos and press releases that follow organizational hierarchy. Informal communication happens outside formal channels like casual conversations or water cooler talks between employees.

  • Directional Communication:
    • Upward Communication: Employees provide feedback, ideas and reports to management, helping leadership stay informed about operational realities and employee sentiments.
    • Downward Communication: Management communicates policies, instructions and feedback to employees to define roles and expectations.
    • Horizontal Communication: Between peers or colleagues at the same level to coordinate tasks.
    • Diagonal Communication: Cross-level communication between different departments without following strict hierarchy.
  • Internal and External Communication:

Internal communication occurs within the organization, involving the flow of information among employees and management. External communication is with parties outside the organization such as customers, suppliers, investors and the public, often through channels like emails, social media, press releases and advertisements.

  • Oral vs. Written Communication:

Communication can also be oral (meetings, phone calls, presentations) or written (emails, reports, letters) depending on the context and audience.

Importance of Organizational Communication

Organizational communication acts as the central nervous system of the company, facilitating task completion, change management, operational consistency and relationship building across all levels of the enterprise. It supports transparency, coordination and efficiency within the organization and helps maintain a healthy work environment.

Organizational communication is a comprehensive framework that includes formal and informal, internal and external, directional and varied modes of communication to support the organization’s functioning and goals.
